Hmmmm...eventually this will include books and authors that I recommend.  For right now let's just leave it at Terry Pratchett (anything - go get Good Omens), Larry Niven's (Man-Kzin Wars and related universe), Robert Heinlein (material before he developed his dirty-old man (DOM) syndrome - so stop at "Friday"), the first couple of books written by Tom Clancy, and just about anything by Isaac Asimov, C.S. Lewis, or J.R.R. Tolkien.
