I was an original Beta tester for this service (though I lost the 'beta" icon in my profile some time ago and have never gotten them to figure out the problem and restore it).  But that is enough whining.  This is a great service, and now with the Xbox 360 everyone gets some level (silver) that provides access to downloads and chats.  You still need to pay for the level (gold) that allows playing against others online.  But, if you want a cheap way to extend the value of your games and greatly increase the amount of time you play, as well as enjoyment, then picking up an Xbox Live subscription is the only way to go.
